Default Ship battles!

Idk if the unreal engine can support this kind of fighting, but what if they added a limited amount of ships and put them on a well scaled map that can fit atleast 16v16? We could have the classic 302's vs alkesh and death gliders! Also It would be cool if you could add a cameo of the 304 class that we could fly around and protect or attack.

The match objective would be to destroy the "king" mothership which wins the battle. It would also be boardable by ground troops via ring transports who's objective is to disable key parts of the ship from the inside. You have the choice ultimately which way you choose to destroy it, or even both at the same time! Ships would be able to shoot down ground troops if the skies are left unchallenged though.

Not sure exactly what kind of terrain I'd want for it, but I'd like something foresty. Perhaps even a few of those ground staff turrets or gun mounted on a F.R.E.D to be controlled by players? Limited ofcourse.

Since it has to be a strategical location..........okay I got nothing =P I'd use any excuse to get me a seat in a glider!

i've been thinking about this too. even if it was just a space map with ships and everything else the same it would still be fun. just replace the map with open space, and replace the people with ships. it'd be funny to see ships jumping, strafing, flying backwards.

Ship fights on SGR? Thats gonna take a very long time, theres still so much to work on right now.

Unreal engine 3 is very friendly towards all sorts of vehicles. Adding f-302's and Death Gliders would give this game a more "SW Battlefront" feel... Which would be good.

i like how the same topics keep getting more and more new threads...


i am starting to think people ignore the threads out of pure arrogance that they think their thread will get us X requested feature just because they posted it.

they wont add a feature just because YOU requested it and not newbieposter #568 wanted it and was shot down for some good reasons, but now that you came along they will put it out next week!

it dont work like that.

your idea is not new or uniqe.

while it would make for some interesting maps, it is still quite a complex thing to add.

so you can bet if they do ever add this it will be a long way off and most likely part of a paid expansion.

Who cares? You know, it's possible that people don't see the other posts that are about the same topic and if it is really that big of an issue, the mods will delete the thread, but at this point, it really seems like YOU are the only one it really bothers.

It seems like almost every thread you comment on, you get up on your high horse and explain why you're right and others are wrong and it's sad because I have seen posts that you have had that are actually good and add to the conversation, so why waste your energy putting other peoples' posts down rather than offering additional points or counter points that are actually useful?

You're right, just because ONE person says "I want feature x" doesn't mean that the devs will implement it and 99% of us fully and completely understand that, but by your own admission, this topic has already been brought up, so if the devs see a pattern of several people requesting the same thing, don't you think they might take notice?

You seriously just need to get over yourself. If you want to comment, awesome, I think we would all like to hear your constructive opinions, but if you just want to tell others how wrong and dumb their ideas are, then take it elsewhere.

I was thinking about this too and the unreal engine can most definatly handle/do it.

Would make a great map and a plus side for sales.

Wes - mur is our friendly neighbourhood troll. We wuv him so There is like at least one other thread on this subject, but meh, nothing to write home about... other than that a few references here and there.

I'd love to see vehicles in game, but I just don't think the sort of combat currently available would really work with it. It'd be like trying to fly an F-22 on a counter strike map. "Oops! Invisible wall! Ooops! Invisible wall! Ooops..." .... Having "space" battles though in actual space... I'm kinda liking what you alls is saying. Yeah fun fun fun.

I'm slightly concerned though about how the engine would deal with the sort of content you see in SGR in a large, potentially infinite playing field.

Also concerned that it's be like creating a whole new game, I doubt we'll see that amount of invested time in something so radically different. They'd be better off making 2 separate games and trying to sell it off as a themed flight/space sim.

There is an Unreal tournament III mod called "Angels Fall First:Planetstorm" (an entry in the 'make something Unreal' that does exactly this. It's rather well done, breaking even between needing a crew for the big ships and having people available to take fighters. I'm sure the mod group did a ton of work to get it to the point it is. If FireSky/Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment open SG:R up to the community for modding, it may be worth asking the AFF group to think about lending a hand to bring ship to ship combat and ship-to-base assault style play to SG:R.
I highly recommend going and checking it out; but I doubt something as huge as this will be added to SG:R in the near future. The Devs have a tonne of other work to do on SG:R that they probably already have planned out. Who knows? Maybe this is already on their books.

I actually saw this on the moddb website. It's very cool. Also, if Firesky opened up the game to the modding community, then all anyone would need is the UDK software which is available for free at UDK.com

Invisible walls - bad.
Death walls - bad.
Death walls with clear boundaries/warning section - good.

But I like this idea. 2 main ships, ship protector players(on foot or at a railgun station) and fighter players.

You guys really think SGR has the capability of implementing ship battles at this point in it's life? There's no way that would work, and if they did it, it would undoubtedly be flawed.

Let them fix their errors before creating new functions

I think your idea Kirk is a awesome one and could be pretty sweet, although you have to wonder how many of those cheap chaps would be using the glider all the time to score untold amounts of kills to ground troops?

Also about the SGC, so you have figured out that it is like destroy and conquer right, but what would the sgc have? Would it only be one sided as far I know the SGC have not be able to capture a mothership, then thinking in their head, hey you know that looks like a great spot a few miles away from a enemy mothership, lets park it and see if we can attack them and give them a chance to destroy ours. lol

The rings would have to be not the only way in, as that would make for really cheap encounters where people could bottleneck an ring room and severely unbalance one side. Also the Hat'ak would have to have at least 2 levels to make it viable in any sense of the word, so elevators or "rings" could be a possibility to gain entrance to the next floor, as well as stairs.

I think the death glider idea is more than possible and we may see it, but the combination of the level and the objectives would be almost impossible for sgr's budget to handle as well as the amount of time required to properly dimension something like that, then implement it and hope to god it does not have alot of bugs or messes with people's computers. I am not shooting down your idea, I love it. Realistically though I think that a standalone game would be better suited for this, likely if Stargate the Alliance had come out this would have been included into that........ Now we can only hope for SGW to include something of this magnitude. My 3 cent review.
